Yeah, he’s a cat. One of 12 my wife and I own, as a matter of fact. And the first one to take a shine to me when my wife and I started dating. Yeah, he was her cat, and so were the other 11. I married the neighborhood’s cat lady.
Since this little venture was about breaking out on my own, I decided on calling it Independent Sports Network, but the name was taken and so was the internet domain. Ditto with Independent Media, Independent Broadcasters and a whole bunch of other “independents.” Until one day, I was at home researching names and a certain feline sat on my lap.
Bingo!
I ran the name by my wife and she loved it. So we checked out the domain name, and it was available, but to spell it out in an audio ad would take too long. So, with a little help of Kathy Gill from the University of Washington’s Master’s in Communication and Digital Media department, we shortened it to vinmedia. Lastly, I picked the suffix dot-us as a tribute to pretty much the only country in the world where a cat could have a broadcasting company named after him.
So there you have it. Vindependent Media.
